I found a vintage pattern (circa 1960) in my sister’s stash for
a baby’s matinee jacket. i hadn't seen the pattern before and my sister couldn't remember where it came from. To add to the mystery, on the back of the pattern the name Alice was handwritten in large letters - hence the name Alice Matinee jacket
It’s a lovely
design but as I haven’t got any babies to knit for, decided to alter the
pattern for Baby Annabell Doll and include a dress, bonnet and booties. The pattern would also fit a premature baby.
As its an old fashioned pattern, the jacket is knit in separate pieces from
hem up then joined to complete the yoke.
The dress is knit in 2 pieces and joined for the yoke. The skirt is in a
simple 4 row pattern, the yoke in stocking stitch. There are only 2 seams to sew from the sleeve cuff to the hem.
If you find any mistakes or have problems with this pattern please let me know either by commenting below or using the contact form.

Thank you for up-loading this pattern I will let you know how I get on with it
ReplyDeleteHi, I just wanted to let you know that I used your pattern, downsizing the yarn and needles to fit a smaller doll, and it came out just beautiful! Now I'm going to try your "Pram set" for a slightly larger Nenuco doll. Thank you so much for sharing these patterns, you're so kind!

you're welcome
DeleteWould this fit a newborn baby?
ReplyDeleteThe chest measurement is only 14" so it would fit a tiny premature baby but not sure about other babies as it depends on their size.
DeleteUse a larger yarn and larger needles, or study the pattern to determine the repeat and increase by adding another repeat.
DeleteHi I love this pattern but I'm no good at adapting and would like it for newborn if that's at all possible?
ReplyDeleteSorry but i only knit for dolls so can't really offer any suggestions to adapt for a newborn
ReplyDeleteWill your hat pattern fit a doll with an 11 inch head circumference? Would it be easy enough to size it down if your pattern is too large? Thanks for any information.
ReplyDeleteLooking for row 2 of dress yoke for alice pattern please enjoy your knitting ! Row 2 missing in pattern
ReplyDeleteHi thanks for pointing this out. I've amended the pattern.

ReplyDeleteHi I am having a problem with row 7 of the yoke. I have 76 stitches after doing row 6 but when following the pattern on row 7 I do not have enough stitch to Complete the row , I get as far being able knit 12 stitches and then run out of stitches, hope this makes sense . Thanks
ReplyDeleteSorry but only just seen your message. You should have 84sts after doing row 6 and 76sts after row 8.
DeleteI am working on the shaping on the yoke. At the end of the odd number rows (decrease rows) it ends ssk, k2 but there are no corresponding k2 at the other decreases (between sleeve & front; front & sleeve; sleeve back). I am only on row 5 but already it looks odd. What I am doing wrong? Help, please.
ReplyDeleteThe dress has a back opening on the raglan edge, the k2 at the end of the knit row and beg of the purl row is the inside placket for the opening, which will be stitched down at the back when making up. It will look a bit odd but keep going and you will see how it turns out.
DeleteThank you for your quick response. That makes sense. Thank you for sharing your patterns.
