Alice Matinee jacket, dress, bonnet and booties

I found a vintage pattern (circa 1960) in my sister’s stash for a baby’s matinee jacket.   i hadn't seen the pattern before and my sister couldn't remember where it came from.  To add to the mystery, on the back of the pattern the name Alice was handwritten in large letters -  hence the name Alice Matinee jacket

It’s a lovely design but as I haven’t got any babies to knit for, decided to alter the pattern for Baby Annabell Doll and include a dress, bonnet and booties.  The pattern would also fit a premature baby.

As its an old fashioned pattern, the jacket is knit in separate pieces from hem up then joined to complete the yoke.  The dress is knit in 2 pieces and joined for the yoke. The skirt is in a simple 4 row pattern, the yoke in stocking stitch.   There are only 2 seams to sew from the sleeve cuff to the hem.

If you find any mistakes or have problems with this pattern please let me know either by commenting below or using the contact form.

Baby Annabell Pram set

When my children were babies (a long time ago now) a jacket with hood and matching leggings was called a pram set. Hence the name of this design.  Those were the days when most new mothers had a shiny new pram with matching bag at the front and either a quilted cover or checked Otterburn rug.

silver cross pram

When one of my visitors suggested a jacket and trousers for Annabell to wear in her stroller I came up with this pattern.   I tend to be bit old fashioned with my knitting (or as my daughter would say, very old fashioned in everything) and this design is no exception.  Its knit in rows to the armholes then in one piece for the shaping, with short seams to sew  for the sleeves and sides.  The trousers are also knit in rows and seamed along the inner edge.

I used King Cole Cherish which is a lovely smooth yarn to work with but any dk would do, just check your tension. A budget yarn would be ideal too as it knits up nice and thick.

This pattern has been tested and checked but mistakes can easily happen when transferring the typed pattern to this blog.  So if you find any errors or have any queries please let me know either by commenting below or contacting me.  thanks
